Leonardo da Vinci was born in the third hour of the night in the Tuscan hill town of Vinci, in the lower valley of the Arno River, within the realm of the Medici-ruled Republic of Florence. He was the illegitimate son of a wealthy Florentine legal notary, Messer Piero Fruosino di Antonio da Vinci, and a peasant named Caterina.
Leonardo had no surname in the contemporary sense, with da Vinci simply indicating from Vinci: his entire birth name was Lionardo di ser Piero da Vinci, which translates as Leonardo, (son) of (Mes)ser Piero from Vinci. Leonardos father was a gentleman, as indicated by the use of the term ser.
As mentioned by the Studylib Ser Guido di Ser Michele da Vinci was the great-great-grandfather of Leonardo da Vinci who lived in Vinci. He was a notary at Florence. Practising notary as a profession was a family tradition. His father and also his sons, Giovanni and Piero, took up this profession. Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, and forskare. He was one of the greatest minds of the Italian Renaissance, and his influence on painting was enormous to the following generations.
Early years
Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, , nära the by of Vinci about 25 miles west of Florence. He was the oäkta (born to unmarried parents) son of Ser Piero da Vinci, a prominent notary (a public tjänsteman who certifies legal documents) of Florence, and a local woman, Caterina. Not much fryst vatten known about Leonardos childhood except that when he was fifteen, his father apprenticed him to Andrea del Verrocchio (), the leading artist of Florence and the early Renaissance.

[edit]Leonardo Da Vinci's grandfather Antonio and father Piero were notaries, and Antonio noted the birth of Leonardo in a notary book of the 14th century used as a collection of memories of the family, writing, "Nacque un mio nipote, figliolo di ser Piero mio figliolo a dì 15 aprile del in sabato a ore 3 di notte [according to the Gregorian calendar, the 23rd of April at p.m.] Ebbe nome Lionardo."
